Dakar

Post by duibhce Kaelann »

"Dakar 2017 bikes leader Joan Barreda is among the three Honda factory riders who are to have an hour added to their times following Thursday's stage.
The Spaniard ended the day with an 18-minute gap over his nearest rival, Husqvarna's Pablo Quintanilla.
However, Barreda, along with teammates Michael Metge and Paulo Goncalves, was found to have refuelled in a prohibited zone during the Jujuy – Tupiza test.
The organisers have stated they are also looking into the data for Honda's fourth factory rider Ricky Brabec.
Honda can appeal the decision, although the insistence from Dakar representatives was that the offense had been clear cut.
Barreda's penalty promotes Quintanilla to the lead of the rally, with the Spaniard demoted to ninth, 41 minutes off the lead.
Matthias Walkner, Stefan Svitko and Sam Sunderland are set to start Friday's stage as Quintanilla's nearest rivals, the former pair having passed Sunderland in the standings after times were adjusted.
Several riders were awarded time after the stage following crashes for Toby Price, Armand Monleon and Alessandro Botturi, as various riders stopped to assist their stricken competitors.
UPDATE: After further investigation from the stewards, Brabec, Honda South America rider Franco Caimi and Honda Portugal rider Pedro Bianchi Prata have all been handed one-hour penalties."

D: We've been told the navigation is much different this year to previous years, is that the case?
L: Well, I've only done Dakar once before, but it certainly wasn't like this! I have never been lost on a stage in my life until yesterday. I rode around and around in circles for 45 minutes trying to find one checkpoint, I was so angry with myself. I think the roadbook might have been wrong, but I'm so tired I know I might not be thinking straight.
D: Well, don't sweat it too much. You are still 3rd in Malle Moto and about 25 mins behind 2nd place. Do you want me to let you know results every day when you arrive at the bivouac?
L: You know, I can see that stuff for myself on the Malle Moto board in the Bivouac. To be honest I'm not that bothered, at the moment this feels more like survival than a race. I think most of us are just trying to get through everyday unhurt at the moment.
D: Is it that bad?
L: Some guy got struck by lightening the other day, I was in the same storm it's only by total luck no one else got hurt it was crazy. At one point I had an inch of hail stones and snow on track, I was pushing hard to get off the neutralisation for my race minute, but I couldn't ride at more than 20mph. There were riders and cars in ditches everywhere.
D: But, they did cancel the second half of the stage yesterday?
Lyndon: Yeah, man that was a miserable days riding. We're from the UK and used to riding in the cold right? 200km of freezing rain in your face and slimy mud under your wheels. The altitude seems to make everything worse too. Thank god for the wet weather kit we sorted. I honestly don't think I'd be alive without it. I'm dragging that prototype heated jacket out today...a heated jacket on a Dakar stage?!?!?
Dave: Wow, that does sound pretty crazy. You know you're famous now right?
Lyndon: What do you mean?
Dave: Oh, about 100 million people saw your 'poo' film last night!
Lyndon: What?! I only did that for a joke to give the editors something to have a laugh at.

"Stage 8 (yesterday) was run almost in it's entirety for the bikes, with just a short section removed in the middle before the race started again once the bikes and cars has crossed into Argentina - the Truck race having finished at CP1 as previously arranged ........
The whole Assistance entourage (together with the racing trucks one presumes) were taking the road route down and out of the Andes, when progress was abruptly halted near the village of Volcan due to burst rivers and landslides - blocking what was seemingly the only (and certainly main) route out of the mountains............
The Orga took the decision to wait overnight and help ensure the local people were safe and cared for, with the intention of moving their cavalcade the following morning.
Ultimately a contingency plan was put in place overnight to redirect the stranded team vehicles, with the intention of reuniting the rally in Salta later today, before the whole circus embarks on a 660+km liaison to this evening's bivouac in Chilecito - where hopefully the racing can restart tomorrow (Stage 10) in far drier and more manageable conditions.

Harsher critics than I have pointed out this means 25% of the total competitive stage mileage has already been cut from this year's Dakar, .......

No doubt this year has seen some unprecedented storms and excessive flooding in the area compared to previous editions - something that realistically the Orga can only ever have a limited contingency for... however, it does beg the question (from the position of a world class competitive motor-sport event) if running the Dakar at high altitude, in an area know for dramatically changing weather is really ideal? Of course with limited other options further south in Argentina, they really have no choice until countries such as Chile and Peru are in a position to come back on board.

"Stage 9: Another day on Dakar 2017, and another stage cancelled..."

"Dakar Day 10: It's lonely at the top... After another day of enforced cancellation (what would have been the longest stage of the Dakar this year at 977kms - the 'Super Belen' would also have been where the Orga had decided to mix up the starting order with the top ten bikes, then cars, then trucks starting together - why? goodness only knows really... like this event needs any more chaos this year! ) - finally the rally is back on track... with just two full [length] stages plus the final showboat left to go..."
