"Stage 8 (yesterday) was run almost in it's entirety for the bikes, with just a short section removed in the middle before the race started again once the bikes and cars has crossed into Argentina - the Truck race having finished at CP1 as previously arranged ........
The whole Assistance entourage (together with the racing trucks one presumes) were taking the road route down and out of the Andes, when progress was abruptly halted near the village of Volcan due to burst rivers and landslides - blocking what was seemingly the only (and certainly main) route out of the mountains............
The Orga took the decision to wait overnight and help ensure the local people were safe and cared for, with the intention of moving their cavalcade the following morning.
Ultimately a contingency plan was put in place overnight to redirect the stranded team vehicles, with the intention of reuniting the rally in Salta later today, before the whole circus embarks on a 660+km liaison to this evening's bivouac in Chilecito - where hopefully the racing can restart tomorrow (Stage 10) in far drier and more manageable conditions.

Harsher critics than I have pointed out this means 25% of the total competitive stage mileage has already been cut from this year's Dakar, .......

No doubt this year has seen some unprecedented storms and excessive flooding in the area compared to previous editions - something that realistically the Orga can only ever have a limited contingency for... however, it does beg the question (from the position of a world class competitive motor-sport event) if running the Dakar at high altitude, in an area know for dramatically changing weather is really ideal? Of course with limited other options further south in Argentina, they really have no choice until countries such as Chile and Peru are in a position to come back on board.

"Stage 9: Another day on Dakar 2017, and another stage cancelled..."

"Dakar Day 10: It's lonely at the top... After another day of enforced cancellation (what would have been the longest stage of the Dakar this year at 977kms - the 'Super Belen' would also have been where the Orga had decided to mix up the starting order with the top ten bikes, then cars, then trucks starting together - why? goodness only knows really... like this event needs any more chaos this year! ) - finally the rally is back on track... with just two full [length] stages plus the final showboat left to go..."
